Colour
My reason for choosing colour as my personal investigation is due to that there are many different ways colour can represented and ways to be experimented with. Experimenting with colours was what drew me more towards colour as my chosen investigation. The psychology behind colour also draws my attention as I feel that every colour has a different way of making each individual person feel (each colour has a different meaning to every person). I feel that each colour has a different meaning or feeling such as red=anger or love, blue=sadness or coldness.
inspirational ideas
My Shoots
Coca Cola
The reason for creating this shoot is due to the colour that is created using the fairy lights that create the bokeh behind the main object of the cola bottle.
A photographer that has given me inspiration to do this work is Kate Benjamin as she has used the effect of bokeh within a shoot with a Coca-Cola bottle.
For this shoot I have placed fairy light in front of a black background, the fairy lights is what give the image the intentional theme of bokeh. I used a wide aperture with a 50ml lens and f1.8, due the shallow depth of field gives these images blurred look that can be seen within these images. The parts of these images that make it successful is how the colour behind the bottle and how they are also reflected onto the surface that the bottle is on, the light from behind and the reflection off of the table makes the clear bottle seem as though the lights are making the bottle look as though it is coloured glass and also make it look abstracted. the coca cola bottle is the main focus point within the images.
This idea of using the bokeh may lead me to do other images using the technique, but instead of using fairy lights in a studio I would like to try to use coloured lights that I find outside of the studio, for example at night using traffic lights or at a fun fair with all of the different light on the rides and stands.
Sound Captured
|
The inspiration for this shoot came form the photographer Fabian Oefner and one of his shots using coloured crystals on a speaker. The idea of this shoot is to be able to capture sound within an image as well as movement. To be able to do this shoot I used a speaker and played music which involved mainly base within it, the base form the music meant that there would be bigger vibrations from the speaker compared to none base music. Using coloured milk on top of the speaker which the vibrations would then make jump, giving the images of the sound and movement wanted to capture within this shoot. To be able to capture the images at the right time the shutter speed had to be fast in order to be able to get the movement of the milk and allowing the images to be sharp and in focus and a large aperture to allow a shallow depth of field. To develop this shoot I am hoping to try to use more colours at the same time so that it makes the images more interesting and not all of the same colour. i believe that what my aim for this shoot of capturing sound was successful as the sound can be seen from the image that have been taken. |
Emotions
The main aim to for this shoot was to show the psychology behind colour can be seen, as well as showing how we interoperate each colours meaning and what feelings people show towards each colour. The colours that have been used for this shoot each show a different meaning or feeling, to be able to show what each colour represents i have used a model who in which show a different facial expression or action to show what the colours mean. for example the colour green shows boredom and the pink shows love.
red=anger
green=boredom
blue=lack of emotion
yellow=depression
white=purity
pink=love
Bubbles
With this shoot I was aiming to be able to capture the light hitting the surface of the bubbles and reflecting off of them to create the colour that i was aiming to find from this shoot. From one light there have been many different colours that have been created even though the light being used is white light.
To improve this shoot I would change the position of the light so that it is not shining onto the background and will hopefully the concentrate more on the bubbles creating more colours. I would also like to take more of a variety of images using the bubbles, this way hopefully I would be able to capture a wider variety of colours.
Abstract Water
To create this effect I used oil and water, these two materials water and oil, using these two materials gives this effect that can be seen in these image as the oil is more dense then the water so it therefore lays on the top giving it this effect of being abstract. To get the colours within the images I placed brightly coloured feathers underneath the glass bowl with the water and oil in. The effect that the oil and water has on the colours is that on some parts it seems to magnify parts of the colours and merges colours together also.
To create this shoot I used a light box in which a clear sheet of acrylic was placed above, a glass bowl which was filled with water was placed in the middle of the acrylic. The coloured feathers were arranged on top of the light box trying not to get the same colour feathers next to each other. Once it was all set up I used a pipet to place drops of oil onto the water which I was then able to take an image of the abstracted water. Towards the end of the shoot instead of using the feathers I placed a printed colour wheel off and placed it under the glass bowl, hoping this would create more of a range of colours within the images, although if I use this again I would make the colours a little darker as the light box underneath seemed to make the colour got too light making them harder to see.
To improve this shoot I would try and add more light within the images as some seem to be dark making the colours stand out more and also maybe put less feathers on the light box as I feel there is too much colour and it makes it look over crowded of colour.
if was to do this shoot again i would use washing up liquid as well as the oil and water as it will help to give the circles more of a defined edge.
Ice Cubes
|
For this shoot my aim was to use the fake ice cubes and get the fairy lights to shine through the ice cubes to create different colours through them. I found the fairy light did not work as well as I hoped, so I swapped them with a follow spot light which made more of an impact with the aim of getting colours through the ice cube. I also layered two images together so that there were two images of a different colour so that the colours would blend to gather and also make the images more interesting and more colour effect. i feel this shoot could of gone better in the fact that the colours that have been put onto the ice cubes could of been bright and to manage to get this i would need to change the camera settings. i could of also tried to add more colours to the so that to colours blend together and create a third colour. to improve this shoot i could next time use real ice cubes so that i could capture the melting process giving the images more of a creative effect as i del they are slightly boring as there is only so many ways in which the ice cubes could be layer out. |
sunsets
With this shoot I was hoping to capture a sunset and with the sunset I was aiming to get many different colours from the sun.
The first two images displayed a lot of reds, yellows and oranges, the second image is one of my favourites from this shoot as the sun going down creates a shadow of the trees and the outline of them also. the sun is showing many different shads of colour and also gives an graduated tone and it is also outlining the clouds.
The bottom two images show the cloud blocking the sun from breaking through, this has allowed a range of different colours and images. I believe this shoot relates to my project because the colour is intense but not as obvious as the trees silhouette the bottom of the image.

skittles
In this shoot I was looking to be more experimental using colour, by using the skittles and hot water I was able to get an interesting pattern from them. Using an animation mount I was able take images one after another without having to refocus, with this I was able to capture the progression of the colours melting out from the skittles. I used one spotlight which gave the perfect lighting to make the skittles colour standout even more. To create this shoot I used skittles and hot water, the skittles were placed round the edge of a bowl with the hot water then poured into the centre of the bowl. The way in which I poured the water made the finished effect look as though the colour was going into a tunnel, although this effect was not intentional, the effect made the images more fascinating. The image looks abstract as it's not obvious exactly what it is. I have grouped the process together to show how the skittles have melted towards the middle. It is like a time lapse. this process would be good to record as i could make a short film so that i could create a time |
Collection of Colour
|
The idea of grouping colour drew my attention as you don't see it occur dry often. I feel that these images are eye catching. I have grouped colours together that look odd together such as the pink and orange, these two colours work well with each other, allowing each colour to stand out. for this shoot i experimented with different compositons and included a moving a moving element of the confetti, each of the colours have different range of objects.
In the second half of the shoot I used a grey background which almost looked like I had used selective colour. With the use of the grey background the lighter colours are made to standout well as well as the colours complementing each other well. the colours that i feel work the best out of the colours that i have chosen is the grey and orange, i feel that because the grey is a dark colour the bright colour of the orange contrast well within the image. i got the inspiration for this shoot from the photographer Giorgio Cravero as in some of his images he uses a coloured background with one colour within his objects that he has used. |
Marbles
The main aim of this shoot was to use the marbles and a light shining onto the marbles so that the colour within them would be reflected onto the white surface. It did not work as well as I hoped and the effect was not what i thought it would be. However there was still a reflection from the marbles and each colour was reflected onto the white surface. some images do not show the reflection, this due to the angle of the light and the colour, such as the orange marbles did not reflect its colour.
to redo this shoot i would want to add more colour to it as i feel as though it is boring and bland. to create the colour effect that i am looking for i could try to use something such as a coloured overlay that would be put on the lights making the colours of the marbles stand out. |

layers
Used images that are similar in the look of them but each image has been photoshopped into different colours, i have then layered the images together. Layering the images on top of each other creates different colours and shades where the image join together or where the images go behind or in forint of each other. Therefore the 4 colours used for each indivdual image creates 7 colours. to improve this shoot different or improve it i would try and use different focus point. with this shoot to improve or make it more interesting, i would use a person that is running or jumping, as well as a per on i could use an animal such as a horse jumping.

M&M bubbles
Using water droplets on a piece of clear acrylic the M&Ms placed underneath were made to look as though they were being zoomed out in each individual droplet of water. The use of the clear acrylic meant that the M&Ms underneath were still able to be seen, this then giving the effect of the droplets looking as though they are zooming out from what is underneath them, as well as the sweets underneath looking closer and larger to the eye. with this shoot I was hoping to create some sort of illusion with the differences of the focus of the colourful sweets. however this shoot did not turn out how I would of liked it to, this due to the acrylic sheet being to scratched and blurred which effected the focus of the M&Ms underneath.
retake of M&M bubbles
For this retake I was able to replace the acrylic sheet used previously with a piece of glass this due to the scratches on the acrylic which effected the images. These images were improved as the sweets placed underneath the glass are more clear and are able to be seen as individual sweets rather then in the first shoot which all of the sweets are looking like all the colours are blended together. However although the images are improved they are still a little blurry and grainy.
Random
|
Theses images are just a random shoot of the colourful sweets. Some of the images have a clear focus point at the front of the images and go blurred towards the back of the images as well as the other way around (blurred in the front and more focused towards the back). These images are organised and unorganised as they are all in rows, however they are unorganised as the colours are in no particular order and are just randomly placed.

A splash of colour
for this shoot I was looking into experimenting with colours with each of these image, this was so that the images would have more of a clearer focus point. to create these images I used Photoshop to create the single colour in each image and leaving the background black and white this I feel give the images a different and more interesting view. within the first image I feel the this is my favourite as I like the way that the image in the back in blurred and the coloured flower is vibrant and sharp giving the flower a more crisp look.
